Pastor Harry Gutelius
Harry Gutelius came to us at Verga United Methodist Church from Eastern University following a 32 year career in the Philadelphia School District. Harry began as an English Teacher at Frankford High and, after eight years, was named Department Head of English at Lamberton High. As the school’s only department head, he supervised the instruction in all content areas. He served for eight years at Lamberton, and for the final six of those, he was the school’s first Athletic Director in addition to his department head duties. His next promotion was to Vice Principal at Germantown High where he remained for four years prior to being appointed to his final post in Philadelphia: Principal of George Washington High, which during his twelve year tenure there (1987-1999) was the largest school in the city. Washington was also recognized for its excellence, being named in a highly respected national publication as one of the finest public schools in the nation for preparing students for college and career. Harry was recognized during this period as the city’s secondary principal of the year.
Upon his retirement from Philadelphia, Harry began a second career at Eastern University. Initially, he was Director of Athletics and a teacher in the School of Education. In 2007, the President of the university asked Harry to take a promotion to head the new College of Education where he served as Dean until his retirement in 2017. It was during that time that he completed his higher learning by receiving his Doctorate in Organizational Leadership.
Harry achieved his other calling in life by becoming a Local Licensed Pastor in the United Methodist Church of New Jersey. After completing all of his work, Harry was appointed as Assistant Pastor of Delran Methodist Church where he served from 2002-2006. He then took a hiatus from his ministry for several years due to his increased duties at Eastern University. During those years on hiatus, Harry continued to teach the adult bible class at his congregation and was also a guest preacher at numerous churches.
As Harry was preparing for retirement at his university, he sought to return to ministry and about that same time was given a call to Verga. He was pleased to accept that in 2015 and has been at Verga since then. Because his ministry has been in addition to his employment, he has always agreed to serve for a dollar a year; the ability to serve God in this way has been a true blessing to his life.
Pat Mellohusky has been active at Verga Church for many years, attending Sunday school as a child and eventually becoming a member. She has been a member now for over 30 years.
Throughout the years, Pat has participated in many church activities: Vacation Bible school; church picnic; annual bazaar; contact for local elementary schools and community outreach programs. In 2016, she took on a new role as layperson for our church.
Pat is enjoying her new role as a member of the Verga UMC laity. She is actively participating in Sunday services. Pat is presently continuing her education through the United Methodist Conference. This is allowing her to continue to grow in her faith and service to our church.
