Pastor’s Pen

Harry Gutelius comes to us at Verga United Methodist Church from Eastern University following a 32 year career in the Philadelphia School District.  Harry began as an English Teacher at Frankford High and after eight years there was named Department Head of English at Lamberton High, where as the school’s only department head, he supervised the instruction in all content areas.  He also served for eight years at Lamberton, and for the final six of those he was the school’s first Athletic Director in addition to his department head duties.  His next promotion was to Vice Principal at Germantown High where he remained for four years prior to being appointed to his final post in Philadelphia: Principal of George Washington High, which during his twelve year tenure there (1987-1999) was the largest school in the city.  Washington was also recognized for its excellence, being named in a highly respected national publication as one of the finest public schools in the nation for preparing students for college and career.  Harry was recognized during this period as the city’s secondary principal of the year.

Upon his retirement from Philadelphia, Harry worked part time at Eastern while being employed full time with Foundations, a non-profit corporation where Harry specialized in services to charter schools and after school programs, mostly in the inner city.  Dr. Gutelius left Foundations in 2002, to begin his time at Eastern. From 2002-07, he was Director of Athletics who oversaw the installation of turf fields on campus and was instrumental in the school’s move from the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference to the MAC. Since 2007, Dr. Gutelius has faithfully served the Loeb School of Education in a variety of leadership roles, culminating in taking over for the school’s namesake in 2010.
